Tips for the Top….a look at the year ahead in the showbiz world

January 4th, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (above) will be the big Brit break through star in the film world during 2011. The former Victoria Secret’s model replaces Megan Fox as the female lead in the huge third installment of the Transformers franchise. The fact she’s dating Hollywood hardman Jason Statham only adds to the buzz.
February could be hugely successful for Darcy boy Colin Firth. He’s hotly tipped to receive an Oscar nomination (if not a win) for his incredible performance in the movie The King’s Speech.
Breakthrough stars of the year will include feisty female Jessie J – who’s just picked up the Brit Award for Critic’s Choice following in the footsteps of Florence and the Machine – soulful youngster Claire Maguire and Pharrell Williams protégé Yasmin (think Massive Attack with a female vocal).
The boys in the music world will be X Factor dominated – with both Matt Cardle and One Direction pushing out albums quickly following their success on the show.
It will also be a year of the female solo star comeback too. Adele returns with her eagerly awaited second album 21 and is already making waves stateside with new single Rolling in the Deep, urban breakthrough act Katy B has given Ms. Dynamite a lifeline with her new single Lights On and Florence and the Machine should be back with a second album towards the end of the year.
Gemma Cairney looks set to be the new star of the radio waves too. After co-hosting 1Xtra’s breakfast show with Trevor Nelson she’s got her own show now doing the drive time slot and is covering for Jo Whiley for three weeks on Radio 1 in January. She’s also a firm favourite with T4 when it comes to hosting their festival coverage.
Meanwhile MTV launch their new show Plane Jane featuring Brit TV host Louise Roe. She’s been a runaway success in the States with the show – that takes a real life Plane Jane and turns them into a model-like-beast – and she’s fresh off the E! red carpet hosting the Globes and the Oscars.
Live music will be huge in 2011. Take That allow Robbie Williams back into the mix for their sell-out Progress nationwide tour in the summer, Kylie Minogue unveils her Aphrodite tour in March and Glastonbury Festival will be back for one more year before taking a year break – headliners are rumoured to be Prince, U2 and Coldplay.
And finally it will be a huge year for Madonna. As well as completely her brand new album by the end of the year she’ll be traveling around the world promoting her directorial movie debut – W.E is a biopic about the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson that led to the British royal abdicating the throne. The critic’s must be sharpening their knives in anticipation.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Duran Duran

December 19th, 2010

1

It’s no wonder Simon Le Bon is a happy man. His band are cooler than ever, he’s not short of a bob or too, he’s got three beautiful daughters and he’s still blissfully happy with his model wife, who is just as stunning as she was when they met in 1984. On December 27 Simon and Yasmin, 46, celebrate 25 years of marriage, but clearly, a quarter of a century together hasn’t dampened their passion. “I wake up in the morning and for ten minutes or so I just get to look at her peacefully sleeping. That’s kind of all you need to know about me’ he says.‘I just want to stay married. I guess I’m very lucky that I picked somebody really bloody good in the first place. “She’s great fun, fantastic, beautiful and we laugh all the time. It’s not always easy at all. But I really want to stay married for life. We’re quite tolerant of each other. We have hard times but things don’t have to be perfect all the time. People are led to believe that if it’s not perfect then just ditch it and change it these days. That’s a fucking mistake. It’s good to hang onto your marriage – even when things get tough. When things are going good you get the benefit of it. She’s my life.”Simon famously spotted Yasmin in a fashion magazine in the summer of 1984 and fell for her on the spot.
Days after seeing her picture he  tracked her down for a date via her modelling agent and the rest is history. Yasmin is still modelling and the pair have three daughters, Amber, 21, Saffron, 19 and Talullah, 16, and Simon says he has no worries about them in the future. “They’re great. I’d have no problem if any of them brought a rock star boyfriend home – as long as the guy could sing.”But his relationship with Yasmin, 46, isn’t the only enduring union in Simon’s life. Duran Duran, who met at art school in Birmingham and became mega stars in the eighties  are back with their most eagerly awaited album for over a decade. Produced by hitmaker Mark Ronson, the boys – Simon, 52, John Taylor, 50, Roger Taylor, 50, and Nick Rhodes, 48 -  have gone back to basics with a cool live feel on new album All You Need is Now.
The boys may now be Old Romantics, but they do look good, even with a combined age of 200. They all have elaborate hair and make up -  including eye liner and mascara  Simon has a suspiciously dark beard and highlights galore,
John’s eyes are still well and truly smoky – his cheekbones are as razor sharp as ever. As is his temperament – if he’s bored of my questioning then he yells: “Next” at the top of his lungs.
Nick wears a velvet jacket, a nod to his eighties style,  with his trademark comb over so any hint of an receding hairline is well and truly hidden from view.
The only person who looks like the man in the street is Roger Taylor. He looks macho and handsome in a George Clooney way “I have to stay fit and healthy being a drummer,” says Roger. “Otherwise I’d go out there and no be able to manage a set. Drumming’s kept me fit and young.”

The boys are hoping to create a stir once more – but Simon says the objectives of the band are different these days. “Its not about selling millions of records,” he says. “Getting into people’s heads is what excites us.”John Taylor pitches in: “I never thought I would end up making music that could actually change peoples day. Music is the best fucking anti depressant out there. You hear the right song at the right time. A three minute song can do that for you. That’s one of the reasons we do what we do.”
The band, a foursome since the departure of Andy Taylor, are straight talking, no nonsense guys these days. They’ve been there, done it and learnt from their mistakes.
John reveals: “We can’t control people’s nostalgia for the eighties. But we’ve evolved in time. And thankfully we’re where we are. “Back in the day we didn’t take shit like awards importantly. My Grammy awards were on the shelf in the bottom of a cabinet. I’m proud of them now but you can’t afford to get too cosy with lifetime achievement awards.”“I still want a best single and best album,” says Simon – who’s taken to laying down for the remainder of the interview as he didn’t sleep a “fucking wink” last night. “We’re still ambitious. Getting lifetime awards shouldn’t make you feel old. Otherwise they’d only give lifetime achievement awards to people on their death beds. And we’re not.” But the boys do admit that keeping up with their sex symbol status from yester year has it’s challenges. Simon in particular sounds like it’s a full time job  keeping the looks that made him one of the most popular pin ups of the eighties. “Being in a band means you’re constantly under pressure to look good,” he huffs jokily. “Its not an industry associated with looking old and fat so you need to look after yourself or people talk. Being a sex symbol can really work against you in later life. We moisturise like our life depends on it.”And all those magic creams must be needed – the boys were well known for their all night partying and crazy antics in the eighties. But they’re glad they managed to keep their antics under wraps. “I don’t get these celebrities that want every aspect of their private life written about,” says John. “Have some dignity.  Dirty washing needs to be kept hidden.
”Simon adds: “We did the drugs and the drink and went wild. But we didn’t make a song and dance about it. Our music was our life. That aspect of celebrity wasn’t pandered too and encouraged so much. We wouldn’t confess to a magazine on a weekly basis. It’s a case of if you get up to naughty shit then you kept it fucking quiet.

Duran Duran performed on the X Factor to promote their last album – but they are by no means uncritical of the X Factor show.“Its good television entertainment,” Simon begins. “I actually think Matt Cardle could be slightly different to the others. He’s more of a rocker isn’t he? “But it worries me with these shows that the biggest part of these kid’s career is the first six months and it feels they can only go down hill from there. I think that’s extremely difficult for the artists themselves. Having said that I think its a bloody difficult business to break and anything that gives you a leg up you should take. I have no problem with a show like that.”But John Taylor is niggled by Simon Cowell and his show. He pitches in: “Look, it’s exactly the same as hamburgers with a show like X Factor. MacDonald’s has its place in society. I hate it. Its boring. That’s the trouble nowadays. A lack of talent. If these kids were writing their own songs and producing their own songs then I’d watch it. But as far as I’m concerned I’ve never really been interested in karaoke.” Nick Rhodes giggles in hysterics and says: “We had talent shows in the old days – but let’s face it Simon Cowell is simply the Hughie Green of this era.”

Cheryl Cole says Nadine Coyle WILL return to Girls Aloud when they reform

December 19th, 2010

Cheryl 1

The girls can continue to say all is well with Nadine Coyle and Girls Aloud all they won’t, but I still don’t believe she’ll ever be back in the band. Cheryl Cole piped up about the Irish singer and whether she’ll be back when they eventually reform whilst speaking to Alan Carr on Chatty Man – which recorded before she went for drinkies at Nobu with Nicola Roberts and Kimberly Walsh! Cheryl said: “I haven’t got any news for you just yet but you’ll be the first to know when I do.”
Alan then asked: “And will Nadine be involved?” Cheryl replied: “Yeah of course. That’s all been blown way out of proportion. Nadine is very much a part of Girls Aloud.”
Whatever Chezza!

EXCLUSIVE: Christina Aguilera brings Burlesque to London and talks Cher, acting and THAT X Factor performance

December 19th, 2010

*Christina Aguilera responded to claims she was a tad smutty on last week’s X Factor final when I bumped into her at the Burlesque premiere earlier this week. The star completely dismissed people left shocked over her raunchy moves and tarty clothes and quipped: “What’s new in my career? I think it’s great that I continue to confidently inspire women to feel confident and comfortable in their own bodies. People have always tried to shame women for their sexuality and I think this movie definitely embodies beauty and the art of Burlesque is all about female empowerment.” Righty, er, ho.
I don’t know why – but Christina doesn’t seem to have a good aura when you meet her. She was giving evils to many people on the red carpet one minute and posing nicely the next (admittedly with me too). And she took a bit of a dig at Cher when I spoke to her. On working with Cher she said: “Everyone even myself included were a little bit in awe, you could feel the excitement when she came on set.
“She is an inspiration and it was so great working with him….him?!  Sorry I mean her.” It was almost like she wanted to shove a cat among the pigeons!
Christina also managed to cause a scene at the after show bash with her erratic behaviour. I saw her openly snogging her new boy toy Matt Rutler, getting sloshed big time and she ended up being carried out by security to her hotel. Throughout the night she had been knocking back the cocktails and at one point she took three drinks for herself from the waiter….classy lady.

*Burlesque star Cher is a legend – and it was an absolute pleasure to meet her this week. She sounds like she had a blast working on Burlesque – despite being initially reluctant to take the role. “I didn’t want to do the film so I thought it was really funny that Christina said that she would drink my bath water to get me on board,” she laughed. “She was a little shaky at first. She was finding her way, but she got there, she should be very happy with her performance. We got on great and has a great dry sense of humour. It was a dream of mine forever to sing in the film so I thought I should do it now or I’ll never get the chance.” The film’s ace – check it out guys.

Behind the scenes at the Top of the Pops Christmas Special!

*Olly Murs (above) has some great advice for Cher Lloyd, Rebecca Ferguson and One Direction. Speaking at the recording of the Top of the Pops Christmas Special he told me: “When you finish you have to use the platform you’ve got. You get an opportunity to do the most amazing things and you’ve just got to work hard – don’t take holidays or say you don’t want to do a certain gig. Earn as much money as you can. You can’t sit there and rest on your laurels.” I’m sure Katie Waisell’s got that idea!
After a cracking year it sounds like Olly’s really going to town for Christmas this year. He revealed: “I’ve set the bar for Christmas presents as I’ve already bought my sister central heating for her house because she had no heating. It was so lucky as we installed it a week or two before the snow hit. So my family are expecting good gifts but I haven’t brought presents for the last two years. I like giving things to people so this year I’ve been really thoughtful about what I am going to give them. I’ve got my nan a really amazing present but I can’t tell you what it is.” Lucky nan!

*Plan B sounds like he’s kinda glad his recent UK tour has come to an end. It sounded exhausting!  Plan, real name Ben Drew, tells me: “You wake up at 3pm, because you would have been partying the night before, sound-check, promo, maybe eat if you’re lucky, then gig and relax and then party till 5am. Every day. It was pretty much like that for two months. It can drive you crazy but I’m back now.
“I want to go back into the boxing gym as I really like the boxing circuit. Then in January I’m off to America and then Australia to tour too. So I need to enjoy my normality for a few weeks.”
His album The Defamation of Strickland Banks is one of the best albums of the year….

BB233256@TOP OF THE POP CHR
*Ellie Goulding (above) didn’t expect the amount of success she’s managed to get for her beautiful – if not a bit over hyped – version of Your Song. The tracks been hovering at the top of the charts for weeks now and she told me at TOTP: “I didn’t expect the reaction I’ve got to Your Song at all. I didn’t expect anyone to like it really. I think the opinion has been really polarised actually and a lot of people hate it, genuinely. I think you should think of it as a different song as I’ve missed out lyrics and sung it in a different key. It’s weird as I’ve got this acoustic song but then my album is going to a whole different direction. It’s weird as it’s going from Starry Eyed, to Your Song to something that’s going to be really crazy. It will have moments of folk.”
The singer also said she finds it bizarre that people are bothered about her growing relationship with Radio One’s Greg James. “It is a little strange to have this interest in us because to me he is just Greg,” she said. “I suppose it is weird thing that he’s a Radio 1 DJ as it’s kind of like, not my enemy, but certainly not like dating someone from my label. But Radio 1 have been such an amazing support to me before I even knew of him.” And I’m sure they’ll continue to be Els!

On The Grapevine…..

December 19th, 2010

Congratulations to my neighbour Amanda Lamb who has gone and put a ring on it with her cameraman boyfriend Sean McGuinness. The pair, who have a beautiful daughter called Willow Rose, got engaged on Friday. I couldn’t be happier for such a perfectly matched couple.

Ronan Keating is preparing for his next solo venture ahead of the Boyzone tour in Spring – he’s jetting off to LA to complete a new album with legend of music Burt Bacharach. He tells me: “2011 is going to be a very busy year – I’m in LA for 3 weeks doing a record with Burch Bacharach and then we have the Boyzone tour from February – but that’s just the way I like it. Life is good when you keep busy.” Good luck, Ro.

I hear the union between One Show host and Welsh rugby star Lee Byrne has come to an end. The pair had been dating since the summer on a casual basis and have finally decided to split with Alex deciding things just weren’t working out for anything more long term. I hear Lee’s already moved on and has been trying to bag Welsh newsreader Andrea Benfield for a date. Lee clearly likes an educated lady on his arm. Good for him.

London based rockers The Boxer Rebellion have been backed by Drew Barrymore to win an Oscar. The band have been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination for their track If You Run in Drew’s latest film Going the Distance. She handpicked the lads to star alongside her in the film after seeing them play live in New York earlier in the year. They’re now one of her firm favourites for an Oscar nod! Good luck!

Paloma Faith, Cherie Blair, Brendan Cole and Kate Moss go to The English National Ballet for The Nutcracker

*Remember when Natasha Kaplinsky was big news? Nope, neither do I. It was a lifetime ago. Anyway, she’s just about to leave Five where she’s the channel’s news anchorwoman and has been busily enjoying being a mother to her two young children. Speaking at the English National Ballet’s The Nutcracker bash this week she told me: “I can’t believe I’ve had two children in the space of two years. It’s crazy. I definitely won’t be having a third. As much as I enjoy it, I’ve put my motherhood boots away.
“I’m really exciting about my future actually. I leave Five next week and have already been talking about different projects. I’m not sure if I’d want to present something like X Factor as it’s a huge entertainment show, plus Dermot does a great job.” Damn right, love.

unknown(6)

Above: Paloma Faith seemed to dress down for the ballet.

*Kate Moss and Sadie Frost enjoyed a girlie night out with their children at the ballet – La Moss arrived just before the curtain rose with a posse including Sadie and Lila Grace and seven other children. My spies saw Kate refuse to use the normal toilets too, instead sneaking into the disabled loos with Sadie’s sister. X Factor star Brian Friedman ran over to her when he saw her and she told him she had been enjoying the show. I love to think Kate’s a normal girl at heart!
Talking of normal, Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis arrived with his kids and brought pre-prepared homemade sandwiches for the little ones to munch on. Classic!

unknown(9)

*You can’t knock Cherie Blair (above with daughter Kathryn) – she can work a room these days. The almighty postbox mouthed one was grabbing every celeb in the room and talking to them like old friends  at the English National Ballet’s The Nutcracker this week. Each of the guests, including Brendan Cole and Kate Moss, was introduced to her daughter Kathryn before the show at a posh drinks reception.

*Tamzin Outhwaite sounds as if she’s enjoying a well deserved break after months of working her backside off on the West End in the musical Sweet Charity. She told me at the Ballet: “I’ve been loving having time off and being at home with the kids. As it’s nearing Christmas we’ve really been getting into making homemade Piccalilli and apple chutney. I making so much of it that it’s ridiculous. I’m becoming a proper housewife and even have a whole drawer in the kitchen full of warming jars. It could be a whole new career for me – I could have my own range of condiments. Or I could just sell them at the front of my house with a honesty box although someone would probably just put 5p in and I’ll be shouting: “It cost me £12 to make”.” Sounds yummy to me.

Above: Lorraine Ashbourne, Andy Serkis and the beautiful Natascha McElhone.

English National Ballet’s The Nutcracker runs until Dec 30th at the London Coliseum followed by Romeo &Juliet from Jan 5 – 15

James Blunt's a single man once again….

December 19th, 2010

James Blunt has had a great year – his album Some Kind of Trouble is flying off the shelves across Europe and he’s ready to spend Christmas at his home in Verbier. It’s OK for some!
Anyway, news for the ladies. James is single after splitting up with girlfriend Sabina Vidal a few weeks ago. The pair have been together for a good few months but have parted ways on good terms and remain friends. My source tells me: “James has been away so much and wasn’t ready to settle down and they mutually agreed it was time to split. They will no doubt see each other – especially as they both have homes in Ibiza.”
So there you have it ladies – start those engines. Blunty’s back! Oh, and his great new single So Far Gone is out January 3.
