Introducing: Twenty Twenty

March 30th, 2011

If you’re still mourning the loss of Busted then fear not as there’s a new pop-punk trio in the shape of swoopy-fringed teenagers Twenty Twenty. Frontman and guitarist Sam Halliday is joined by his brother Jack on bass and close pal Sonny Watson-Lang on drums. The boys are set to release their debut single Love To Live on April 17 followed by mini-album Small Talk on May 2. Natalie Edwards caught up with Sam and Jack to talk brotherly feuds, partying with The Saturdays and amassing a collection of girlie underwear…

Twenty Twenty
There’s been lots of comparisons already to Busted and McFly – how would you describe your sound?
Sam: We are just a fun-loving band and we love writing music that people can relate to and have fun listening to. We write lots of up-beat songs that people can dance along and party to but we also have a few slightly slower songs for people who have experienced some heartbreak in life. It’s a big mixture of everything really. When we write our stuff we always want to make sure that people can relate to it.

How long have you been together as a band?
Sam: Last month we celebrated our two year anniversary together although we’ve only been signed to Geffen for the last two months. We did a lot to build ourselves up on the independent circuit first. I think it means we enjoy the celebrity side of things a little bit more and get really excited if we get to support a really big band or get invited to parties.

What’s it like being in a band with your brother? Have you ever had a Gallagher-style disagreement on stage?

Sam: We are definitely not like stereotypical brothers who argue and stomp off into our bedrooms while telling each other to ‘bu***r off’. We have been close growing up together and at school as there is only a year and a half between us. Although the three of us are all like brothers and you wouldn’t immediately able to tell that it is Jack and I who are brothers.

It must make things easier having your brother there with you when it all starts to get a little crazy?
Sam: Like you say it is nice having someone there and almost like having one of your best friends always with you. We spent a lot of time during our teenage years playing guitar together and practising at home in our loft. We were always dreaming of being in a successful pop band so it is nice to have someone there who has your back when it all gets a little bit hectic.

Do you think it was inevitable that  you were always going to be in a band together?
Sam: I’m not sure. From about the age of thirteen we were always playing together but then when you’re at school everyone seemed to be in a band together. I think we’ve always been musical from an early age and I’m really glad this had happened for us.

What can people expect from your mini-album Small Talk?

Jack: They are all pop-rock songs and we wanted to make an album our fans could relate to – for example there’s a song called The Puppeteer which is about someone being controlled in a relationship. There is something on there for everyone.

And I hear you’ve been working with Preston from The Ordinary Boys on some tracks?
Jack: Yeah, if you pre-order our single at the moment there’s an additional track on there called Tell Me A Secret which we wrote with him. It was done before we got signed up and we really liked it and were keen on getting it out there. Obviously he has done what we want to do and he was telling us all these stories of what he’s been through and how it all works. He gave us a lot of advice. He said to make sure that we enjoy it and listen to what people tell us.

Will you be releasing a completely separate full album?
Sam: Yeah, I think it will be in addition. Anyone that knows us knows that we never stop writing. The only time we’re not writing is when we’re sleeping or on tour. We have got loads and loads of songs already.

I bet you boys had fun supporting five foxy ladies like The Saturdays recently on tour…
Jack: It was so much fun and definitely the best thing that we’ve done so far as a band to date. Because every act was different on the tour it meant there was no competition and we could all get along really well. They’re just as up for partying as we are so we had a great time. On the last night in Dublin we had a dance competition and it turns out they have got worse club moves than we have. They were pulling out one’s like riding a scooter and playing ping-pong. Sadly we missed out on an opportunity to chat them up.

What strange gifts have your female fans been giving you?

Jack: They always bring us food because they always think we don’t eat on tour and buy us underwear too which is really strange. It all collects up – alongside the bras we get thrown on stage – in the back of the van and then at the end it all goes into a room which put all the stuff we’ve been given in. Hopefully it’s all clean!

When I met Debbie Harry…..

March 27th, 2011

Iconic Blondie star Debbie Harry tells me she still feels the pressure to produce good music despite so many years in the business. This week I joined Debbie at The Ivy Club to hear tracks from the band’s new album Panic Of Girls (out May 30). She told me: “We still want to put good music out – will an original Blondie sound.  This is the best album we’ve put out for a long time and I’m happy with the results. Blondie are far from starting to put the brakes on, trust me.” I wouldn’t doubt you, Debs.

Blondie’s latest album “Panic of Girls’ is available to buy as part of the limited edition Future Fanpack and download on May 30 – for further details and Summer 2011 tour dates visit: www.blondie.net

Lisa Snowdon on her meningitis battle: "Thank God Johnny made me see a doctor."

March 27th, 2011

Dean-Lisa

Lisa Snowdon is finally back on form after her recent bout with viral meningitis. But she told me this week she owes a lot to her Capital FM breakfast show co-host Johnny Vaughan – who forced her to seek a doctor in the first place.

Lisa, promoting her involvement with the fabulous Spring/Summer M+S campaign, told me: “If it wasn’t for Johnny I could have been extremely ill. It literally took me away for three months. I should have gone to the doctor or the hospital far sooner than I did. It felt like the worst headache you’ve ever had in your life multiplied by a million. I thought I was having my first ever migraine and I let it go on for three weeks. Slowly but surely other symptoms began to appear. My back started hurting, I had a rash and a sore throat. All these signs built up. I got into the studio one morning and thought the lights were extra strong – I was light sensitive – and  Johnny got me to go to call his chiropractor and he immediately asked if I’d had a blood test and I was whisked into the doctors and then hospital. And that was that.”

Having known Lisa for years it’s surprising somebody so fit and healthy could come down with such a horrid illness. She laughed: “The worst thing is I’m the fit and healthy person. I detox and I go to Thailand and chill out and do yoga and I’m like: “colonics are great” and then I’m the person struck down with meningitis. I feel like I can’t preach to people about health anymore.” Continue as you were Missy!

Jo Whiley bows out from Radio 1 with a little help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl

March 27th, 2011

Jo and Dave

It’s the end of an era today at BBC Radio 1 where Jo Whiley bows out from the station in her last ever show this afternoon.
Jay Z has played at her house, Madonna’s co-hosted her show and Jo’s been there at the very beginning of so many core Radio 1 acts … from Plan B to Lily Allen and the Arctic Monkeys to Adele!
To celebrate Jo’s move to Radio 2 the radio star’s Rock star husband Dave Grohl chooses his favourite moments from the times they have met on the show today (Sunday).  Dave told Jo in the interview: “In the last 20 years you’re the one Radio 1 presenter that I’ve always wanted to do interviews with. I’ve probably done more with you than anyone in the world and I can’t imagine that this is really our last interview.” A fitting end to an era – tune into Jo today between 1-4pm.

The rest of this week's column…..

*It sounds like there was only one box to be in at last weekend’s matinee performance of the X Factor tour. I hear Keith Lemon and his mum Pat, Lizzie Cundy, Natasha Hamilton and Gail Porter drank their way through the entire bar allowance in their freebie box. Hell, Gail even got carried out by a friend because she was so sozzled! My source tells me: “The gang were on fire – drinking loads of wine and beer and loving the show. Katie Price arrived with Leandro too and Danielle Lloyd and seemed very unimpressed with how much fun the others were having.” And I’m told Katie was far from in the mood for fun too. Pitching up she fumed: “Can anybody speak f**king Spanish here? I can’t understand a f**king word he’s saying.” Who said romance was dead….

*Tailor Made Events boss Alex MacLean knows how to throw a party. Celebrating his birthday this week the effortlessly cool man about town hosted a private party at Morton’s club in Berkeley Square before continuing the partay back at Blakes Hotel until dawn. Guests included Meg Mathews, flamboyant financier Andy Wong and Francesca Versace. Alex, I salute you.

*Richard O’Brien doesn’t sound that thrilled with Glee’s version of the Rocky Horror Show. Asked what he thought of the recent episode he barked at the Lighthouse Gala Auction in aid of the Terrence Higgins Trust: “I didn’t watch it. Was it any good?”
His daughter Amelia, complete with a scrunched up nose in disgust, added: “If you like Glee then you’ll like their version. But Glee’s the worst thing in the world.” Alright love, whatevs.
Richard’s daughter Amelia was also introducing herself as “his daughter not his wife”. She added: “Everyone tonight thinks I’m his 22-year-old wife. He loves it and thinks it’s funny but it’s so embarrassing.” And creepy.

*Rumer continues to make waves in the music industry. To coincide with the release of her dreamy new single Goodbye Girl the Brit nominated singer is performing an exclusive show for Radio 2 at Abbey Road Studios. The show will feature special guests including Sandie Shaw too. There are two hundred pairs of tickets available for free via the BBC website – GO!

*Bless Cheryl Cole for not really knowing what to do when she came face to face with Prince Charles this week at a Prince’s Trust function. I’m told: “When the Prince arrived he spoke to Cheryl and Kimberly Walsh first and spent longest amount of time just with them. He seemed very charmed by the two gorgeous girls but Cheryl didn’t seem to know whether to curtsey or not so in the end gave him a huge smile and kind of bowed her head – while Kimberley did full on curtsey.” Ha!
Cheryl certainly sounded pleased to have slipped into the UK with no drama after returning from the States. She said: “It’s great to be home, I’m really excited and happy to be involved with these awards. I managed to sneak in, didn’t I?!” You sure did – top marks to you!

*Well Jordan’s new bit of hot stuff Leandro Penna has got the seal of approval from her besties, Gary Cockerill and Phil Turner. Gary told me at this week’s Lighthouse Gala Auction in aid of the Terrence Higgins Trust: “It’s life, it’s all just fun isn’t it? About having a bit of fun and not taking anything too seriously. There’s no surprises, there’s no stones unturned. He’s a good guy. He gets the gay seal of approval from us.
“The thing is you don’t choose family but you choose your friends. We’ve been friends with Kate for so many years it’s ridiculous. We almost get slated by people for being her friend, but what are we supposed to do, drop her, sell out like her other friends have? We’d never do that.”
Butch Phil added: “There’s a lot of tripe being written. But Kate knows what she’s doing.” Let’s hope so.

*Sam Womack wants to slip quietly out of her role on EastEnders. The star tells me she’s getting ready to leave the soap but there won’t be a big shindig before she starts her role in South Pacific on the West End. “I think at the leaving party at EastEnders I just want to creep out,” she told me this week. “I don’t want a big deal as I’m not very good at those big. It will also be very emotional because I will be saying goodbye to a lot of very close friends. I’ll be telling them that I love them all dearly. I’ll definitely miss Rita Symons the most.
“Then I’ll be going into South Pacific playing Nellie Forbrush and rehearsals start soon. I need to stop eating and get my arse into shape. My trick at the minute is to wear padded pointy shoulders as then it cancels the rest of your body out. I can’t wait to get my dancing shoes on as it’s five years since I was last on stage in Guys and Dolls.” Good for you!

Jonathan Ross sounds excited about his new ITV1 chat show now that plans are coming together. “They’ve have just confirmed the slot for my new chat show later this year,” he admitted at the Nintendo 3DS bash this week. “I can’t say what it is yet but it’s a great slot. I don’t think it’s opposite another chatshow host but I don’t think that matters as everyone Sky+’s everything nowadays anyway.
“I haven’t even begun to think about guests. I’ve already interviewed most of the stars but there are still a handful that I want to meet. I’m going over to LA soon to have a few meetings to see if I can get them but I’m not going to say who incase I’m unable to pull it off.” I look forward to hearing who he manages to get in the bag.

The legend that was….Elizabeth Taylor

March 27th, 2011

There will never be another Liz Taylor. Fact. And a friend of mine told me a fantastic story about Liz that I just had to share with you all. My pal tells me: “She was bickering non stop with her last husband Larry Fortensky on a Concorde flight we were on once and she said to the cabin crew: “Darling, could you please get me another glass of champagne, and while you are standing up, can you have a word with your pilot, and tell him Liz Taylor needs him to put his foot down on the gas pedal.” When attendant said they couldn’t go any faster, and the bickering between her and hubby got worse, Liz shrieked to attendant: “Darling more champagne please. Could chopping logs get us there any faster?” Considering Concorde flew at twice the speed of sound this greatly amused me. RIP Liz.

Aldo Zilli launches Baby Zilli with a star studded event in Soho

March 27th, 2011

Baby Zilli 16

I’ve known hilarious Italian chef Aldo Zilli for years now – we used to hang out in his restaurant for long lunches eating up lobster spaghetti all the time. So it’s good to see Aldo and his wife Nikki thriving in life – he’s one of the good guys.

Baby Zilli 38

Aldo held a special launch party this week at his flagship Soho restaurant Zilli Fish. And a few of his celebrity pals popped by to say hello. Former EastEnder Lucy Benjamin (above) was ready to burst at the lunch, Kate Garraway (below) looked slick and current EastEnder Stefan Booth (at the top with Aldo, Nikki and Aldo’s daughter Laura) popped by too. The afternoon was considered a “tea party” complete with a baby dining room for tots to sample the new kids range of food products. Bless.

Myleene Klass gives birth to a real Hero

March 26th, 2011

Specsavers Winner Myleene Klass 09

Television star Myleene Klass has given birth to her second baby girl and named her Hero after the character in Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing.

Leenie also says the choice of name was influenced a result of ancient Greek mythology.

The musician and Marks & Spencer model, 32, announced she was pregnant with her second child in September last year. Myleene, who found fame as a member of pop band Hear’Say, and fiance Graham Quinn have another daughter Ava, three.

The star’s management announced news of baby daughter Hero’s arrival on her official website on Friday evening saying: “This afternoon (March 25) at 5.02pm Myleene gave birth to Hero Harper Quinn. Weighing 6lb 2oz.”
A spokesman for Myleene added: “Mother and baby are both very well. Myleene, Graham and Ava are all very proud and excited about the arrival of baby Hero.”

The star revealed in a recent interview she had started ‘panicking’ after not falling pregnant so easily like she had done with Ava and doctors even suggested IVF to her.
She revealed: “Ava was a surprise so I assumed it would be easy, but it wasn’t. It’s been tough. You get to the stage where every month you’re waiting, and then when you’re not pregnant, it’s so disappointing.
“I was panicking a bit. The doctors started talking about IVF and I was upset. You think, “This is serious, what if it doesn’t happen?”‘
But she’s clearly thrilled to be a mother again. Myleene worked right up to the day of giving birth and said last week: “I’m glad I’ve kept busy and worked right up until the birth. I’d have been so bored if I’d have put my feet up.”
The star spent a day last week making a plaster cast of her bump to hang on the wall. Myleene – who clearly made the cast just in the nick of time – added: “It’s amazing. It’ll be mounted on my wall with nipple tassels on it.”
