FIRST LISTEN: Adam Lambert’s wonderful Trespassing….

Posted by Dean Piper On January 18th, 2012

Having spent time with Adam Lambert recently I’ve got to know him a little and knew from the get go that Trespassing would be VERY different to For Your Entertainment. And it is.
It’s pop music to the core. You need to dust off those Cuban heels, grab your disco pants and unleash on the dancefloor.
So I heard six songs today. Three are sure fire radio and chart hits – easily. And this is aside from the lead single Better Than I Know Myself.
That track is a ‘soft launch’ to an album like this.
On his debut album Adam would probably freely admit it was a little rushed. As with every person that comes out of a show like Idol, it was a case of strike while the iron is hot.
Trespassing is actually a completely different beast. Firstly, his vocals are amazing. Secondly, Adam co-writes most of the tracks – making it deeply personal. And thirdly he’s worked with some of the best producers in the business.
This album was born to fly.
It’s also something I can imagine in full being more of a ‘piece of work’ rather than just a male pop vocalist album. The scope to push boundaries with the tracks I’ve heard is huge.
It also feels like an album that will take him from being a name ‘from Idol’ in Europe to a serious player. A household name.
I can see the majority of these tracks being on radio (Capital will cream their pants over it) – and I’m told there’s more surprises in store.
There’s one track that is yet to be complete that “will blow your mind”.
What I’ve heard has given me a buzz. Most tracks gave me an excited tingle down my spine – and that doesn’t happen much when I’m thrown 50 odd singles and albums each week….believe me!
So before I start a track by track run down let me say this. I believe in this album and Adam. He’s delivered something quite special here.

Better Than I Know Myself – Lukasz ‘Dr Luke’ Gottwald, Circuit, Ammo, Claude Kelly

The first track off the new album. BTIKM is an interesting choice for the lead. It’s perfect pop and his vocals are on fire. Releasing this track first shows just how confident the label is on this album.

Outlaws of Love – Rune Westerberg, Adam Lambert, BC Jean

This is ‘the ballad’ of the album. As a whole I’m told Trespassing is going to have a light and dark feel as a whole. Lots of high energy dance songs on one side and then a dark side that feature the more personal stuff.
This track is all about Adam coming out, getting to know himself and dealing with prejudice he’s encountered for being gay. “Say we’ll rot in hell, I don’t think we will.”
It’s written beautifully and is empowering and you really connect with the fact this song is deeply personal. It feels like an Aguilera ballad (minus the dodgy diva fakeness).
He should be extremely proud of this one – and it will become a firm anthem for the fans…..

Cookoo – Ollie G, Adam Lambert and Bonnie McKee

This song is friggin’ HUGE. It’s dance pop through and through and people will be gagging to remix it. A floorfiller, massive radio hit for Europe and even has a Britney style breakdown for the dance moves to be flexed. It was instantly a winner and a definite single.

Trespassing – Pharrell Williams, Adam Lambert

Who knew that Pharrell and Adam would make such an insanely good match! Not an obvious pairing but it feels so slick. It brings the FUNK and has a Gwen Stefani Hollerback Girl clap to it. You could imagine the video the second the claps began.
It also has a touch of early Queen to it in the shape and form of the thundering bassline running throughout.

Shady (Feat. Nile Rogers and Sam Sparro) – Lester Mendez, Nile Rogers. Written by Adam Lambert and Sam Sparro

Shady is the track Justin Timberlake should be launching if/when he realises that he was once a Prince of Pop. It’s a little more pop r+b I guess and yes, it is shady. There’s a Scissor Sisters style funk feel to it that runs throughout and the guest vocals work beyond perfectly. I was excited about this one and it doesn’t disappoint.

Broken English – Lester Mendez, Adam Lambert, Sam Sparro

Easily his strongest vocal on the sampler I’ve heard. It’s subtle and controlled and reminded me of a Darren Hayes style track but with an injection of adrenalin to make it actually worthwhile listening too without wanting to top yourself when it’s overplayed.

I’m gagging to have Trespassing on my iPod. I’m also thrilled that he’s produced this. It’s a new Adam but most importantly it’s a better Adam. He’s raised his game, found what works and is onto a winner.

P.S. EXCUSE THE OLD PICTURE….we are both ridiculously better looking these days……

With reviews like this Dean we can only hope the rest of the UK takes notice of Adam and gives him the recognition he deserves here. I’ve loved and supported Adam since 2009 and got so frustrated that he wasn’t play listed on the major stations here, hopefully with this new album things will change.

AWESOME review of the tracks you heard Dean and I cannot wait for March 19th so I can hear them for myself!!!

Dean I love your review of six of the tracks on Trespassing. If I was just a casual music fan and not a fan of Adam I’d be counting the days when I could buy the album. Finally, Adam is going to get the recognition that he deserves. In my opinion, Adam is the most vocally talented male singer I’ve ever heard in my life not to mention the most charismatic, gorgeous, sexy, intelligent, well-spoken, witty man I’ve ever encountered. I feel like many who haven’t met him in person that we already know Adam because of how he presents himself to us so down to earth, real, genuine, honest and basically is an open book. You may not understand this but his fans genuinely ‘love him.” It’s difficult to understand but we really do love everything about him. He has fans from 2 yrs old to 90 and we all adore him. His versatility in his music genres is what makes him stand out from the rest of the artists in today’s music industry. There is nothing generic, manufactured, contrived or plastic about this young man he’s the REAL thing.

  9. Daisy Says:

Thankyou for such a good review Dean. It’s good to see some publicity here now. March is such a long way off and I am getting impatient for my copy of Trespassing to drop through the letterbox. Can’t get enough of this man he’s amazing! It’s a good job we don’t have vinyl any more, my copy of BTIKM would be completely worn out.

  12. CzechMate Says:

Thank you Dean for sharing your insights and most of all, your enthusiasm. It only makes the wait for this new stellar album more unbearable, but truly delicious. Passionate fan of Adam’s to the time beyond time.

Thank you Dean! Adam has definitely upped the ante, after that flawless performance on Jay Leno’s show. But that’s what we expect of him, and he never disappoints!! I am so looking forward to the album, and from your review of the singles above, it’s obvious that 2012 is going to be Adam’s year.
He deserves it, in more ways than one!!

  20. RedRoseQueen1 Says:

I WANT IT ALL…AND I WANT IT NOW! He NAILED BTIKM on Leno! The look, the vocals, INSANE! No..I take that back…not insane….PURE PERFECTION! Yes, that’s better! Thanks for the great review Dean. I didn’t think it possible to want Trespassing MORE. I was wrong. ;D

Thanks a lot. f only you could make March 20 arrive NOW! Adam is a delicious treat to be savored over and over again. But seriously, after all this time, I am ready to burst. Thanks for the super review. And watch out for AdamStorm. It’s already onshore.

  24. funbunn40 Says:

Great, insightful review of what is shaping up to be an iconic album! Thanks for the good words supporting Adam’s undeniable talent. It’s about time the US realizes Adam Lambert is a one in a generation talent. I’ve never heard or seen any man this exciting, charasmatic and vocally unique and superior in my lifetime. His breath control and mastery of those soaring, pitch perfect notes are a testament to his years of professional training and diverse experience. He knows what to do with that powerful, magnificent voice. I agree that Christina gets carried away with the diva filled vocals. She has a great voice, but riffs it to excess,as did later Whitney Houston, losing any beautiful melody . When Adam precisely holds a note you hear the rich resonance of his voice and it adds dramatic effect, feeling and anticipation. Now more than ever I’m awaiting Adam’s Trespassing album! Glamberts worldwide are also appreciating your words. Thankyou!

  25. Stevokp Says:

I CAN’T WAIT to hear all of this! Adam is a supernova of talent, the full package and he does it all with a great blend of maturity, sexiness and humbleness. Have loved him from day 1 on idols (and so has my family and pretty much every friend I have) The first album was incredible, I listen to it (or part thereof) everyday, and now I am so keen to hear this Adam 2.0! Thanks for the reviews! *marks March 20th on calendar*

  26. Angelina Says:

I just don’t know if I really should look forward to this record. I’m not quite a Pop fan, more a Rock girl and that was what I loved on Adams last record, the amazing rocking songs with a pop touch.
In some interviews he said, the new record would have something of Nine Inch Nails, so I started hoping, there would be some Rock on it too; especially after that awesome performance with Queen at the EMAs and having heard that old stuff on the ‘Beg for mercy’ compilation. I love his voice in rock songs.
But now, the new single is, as written above, pure pop and the other reviews say quite the same as this one. And even worse, the Leno performance had amazing vocals but apart from that it was almost boring; that little drive the song has in the studio version was missing. If that is how the concerts of the upcoming tour are going to be, I have to overthink if I’ll attend as many as last time.

Please don’t be mad at me for my view on things, especially if you’re a fellow fan. I don’t want to say this record is going to be ‘bad’ or ‘not good’. I just think, I won’t like it as much as the last one, because I like the rock songs much better than the slow/pop ones.
Times and artists change and that’s good, but not everyone has to appreciate every single change.

  27. Jenben Says:

I am so looking forward to Adam’s new album. Just reading some of the description of the songs, my God. Your description of Trespassing – FUNK and a Gwen Stefani Hollerback Girl clap to it, I am dancing already. I love FUNK and I’m so happy Adam put some on his album. Thanks for the review Dean!

  28. Taylor Barbe Says:

I think Adam is very good success in approaching the plate, and do not worry about things because of what you’re singing is always good! I especially love you more and more ♥ ♥

  29. carma Says:

WOW!!! I cant wait to hear it now!! amazing! great feedback- thank you. I love the idea of Adam doing R&B and FUNK more than anything. I think thats where he should be going. but his vocals are insane with everything he chooses to sing anyway. one more thing- this picture was taken in london – on the same day I met Adam for the first time. best day of my life.

  30. Adam Lambert Daily Update – January 19, 2012 « On the Meaning of Adam Lambert Says:

    [...] FIRST LISTEN: Adam Lambert’s wonderful Trespassing…… #adamlambert…” THANKS DEAN!!! Glad u dug [...]

  31. TLKC Says:

I would love a Rock cd, too, but Adam is young, has a lot of years ahead of him and will probably create music in quite few genres before he’s done. If POP, it has too be now. Also, that is the way to the biggest audience, which Adam needs, if he wants support for a career of true creative freedom.

This review thrills me. THANK-YOU DEAN PIPER!

Oh, and I don’t think you should have to say “please don’t be mad at me”! Who can be angry with anyone for freely expressing their musical taste and wishes for a taste of other colours on the broad spectrum of Adam’s artistic palette?

  32. Carlos Says:

Excellent review. You gave us a few more deets. Can’t wait to listen to this album I know it will push some boundaries! Thanks for sharing what you heard with us!

  33. Jason Says:

I am chomping at the bit waiting for Adam’s new album. World this dude can SANG!!

  34. stinglikeabee Says:

Thank you for taking the time to chat about what you heard, I am pretty excited and can’t wait to get my hands on this cd. My FYE is worn out although it is still the only CD in my car player. Will Trespassing replace my FYE…Naaah probably not, I will just put them both into rotation in the old CD player ready to go on my long rides to work….Thanks! Need to get another copy of FYE it is skipping tracks now, totally worn out..

  35. Jacki (@AdamMaksMeSmile) Says:

Thank you Dean for this lovely review. I was excited before for Trespassing to be released, but after reading your article, I want it like NOW! Could we just skip forward to March 20th please!?!

  36. Jason Says:

Thanks Dean for your reviews of these Trespassing songs. ALL reviews I’ve read so far have been so positive. Oh and Angelina: you are incredibly transparent dearie touting that beg for money crap. I am on to you.

  37. funbunn40 Says:

Angelina, Everyone has diverse tastes and we all may not be attracted to the same elements of Adam. I happen to like it all now, at first preferring the American Idol covers that showed different sides and more into the ballads until Whole Lotta Love got my rock vibe going. Adam can sing anything and tries to give us all what we want and I think there will be a good mix on this album. Give it a chance. We haven’t heard it yet.

  38. Fatma Says:

Now you mentioned Darren Hayes in your blog – I even want the album more that EVER!!

  39. Angelina Says:

Funbunn40, sure I will give it a listen. I’m still hoping for more than ‘just’ (no offence!) Dance and Pop, which are the only labels I’ve read for the record lately. But I will only buy it, if there are songs I really like; I’m way beyond the age when I bought records only because I used to like the artist.

  40. glamity58 Says:

Thanks for the great review Dean. You’ve got me excited and hopeful that the UK will finally recognize this true talent. I hope my country, the USA, gets it’s act together and gives him more love. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. With your support and so many others, he has a chance to do great things here. I am an older fan who has never followed an artist like this. I’m an old rock ‘n roll fan and I don’t generally like pop, but Adam has changed everything for me. He can sing opera, musical theatre, pop, rock, hard rock, you name it.
