New emerging pop superstar Jessie J has dubbed the British music scene “rubbish” in an exclusive interview with me.
Jessie – who’s just clinched the Brit Award Critic’s Choice gong – says the industry needs a good shake up and I have to say I couldn’t agree more with her.
Snuggling in her dressing room at the Brits launch this week Jessie, 22, fumed: “The British music scene is rubbish right now. There are no artists pushing boundaries. There are no female artists in the UK that mix things up. I didn’t come into the industry to be a puppet. I’ve got a lot to prove and I’m here for a reason and I’m going to make a point.”
Jessie – dressed in a fabulous gold metal conical bra, teensy hotpants and towering heels – went on to say Lady Gaga has made artists like Leona Lewis be perceived ‘boring’ by music fans around the globe. “Of course Gaga is incredible but she’s set the bar so high for everyone else,” she revealed. “She’s literally made normal artists and music ‘boring’ which really bothers me. It pisses me off when people say Leona’s boring. No she’s not. She’s got a sick voice and being normal is cool. I’m not trying to create a world that people can’t be let into with my music. I want to be relatable and have young girls wanting to sign and be like me.
“I don’t do the style thing to be an artist that people can’t relate too. I’m no fantasy artist. I’m a girl and I can dress up. I’ve got an opportunity to dress up and any girl would love to do this. I’m not going to ponce around saying: “I’m now taking you into my world and I’m not a real human being.” I’m so human it’s unreal. I’m not a robot.”
The new star is currently riding high in the charts with debut single Do It Like A Dude and will pick up her gong at the Brit Awards on February 15 at the O2 Arena. But you won’t catch this young lady hitting the after shows in a drunken mess – she’s dry! “I don’t drink, party or do drugs,” she reveals. “Not because I’m a clean living twit of a 22-year-old. Because this voice is my bacon. It’s my life right now and without this voice I’m nothing.
“I go clubbing but I dance and I won’t ever talk. If you see me in a club then I will be miming at you. I want this voice to buy me a house, a car and spread my music around the world.”
And it’s not just the UK she’s set to conquer – America is a huge priority for the star. “America is a huge deal for me. I went to the US to get signed. The first deal failed in the UK so I went out there and got it. I took the Brit flag out there and the US is the part I want to conquer. I’m going to put that flag in the suitcase and do my thing. You just watch me.”
The Brit pop music scene has been starved of somebody outspoken, sexy and daring that pushes limits for years now. So I’m thrilled all that’s about the change with the arrival of Jessie J.
