The BBC Radio 1′s Teen Awards at the weekend were a fine affair of showbiz and pop! Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, JLS, The Wanted and Professor Green all performed for 4,000 teens at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. And how cracking did Katy (above) look in her, now trademark, stage rubber dress!
Above: Taylor Swift looked girlie chic and pretty as can be at the Teen Awards….
And the winners were…..
Best TV Show
Biffy Clyro – Bubbles
Plan B – The Defamation of Strickland Banks
But the night wasn’t all about ‘showbiz’ – there were some serious points too….
The award for ‘Teen Hero’ was presented by Katy Perry and Radio 1 DJ Greg James to sixteen year-old Connor from Sunderland. After an accident left Connor with 90 per cent burns he was medically induced into a coma and has had almost 100 operations to date. Connor was thought to be losing his battle to live on six occasions but fought to survive all odds and now fronts a campaign for fire safety. He also got to meet Taylor too….see below.
The ‘Teen Community Hero’ award went to Alex, 17, from Ashton-Under-Lyne. Alex caught meningitis when he was just seven years old and lost the use of his legs. He’s now a wheelchair basketball player with Olympic ambitions, a sport ambassador for his local area, a charity fundraiser and also helps other disabled children.
And, Jack from Maidenhead was named ‘Teen Entrepeneur’. The sixteen year-old spotted a niche market in his local area: rearing rare breeds of chickens in humane, free-range conditions for sale to local families to keep in their gardens and developing a system so that eggs can be harvested to provide future generations.
Fearne Cotton who hosted the event with fellow Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw (below) said: “All of the teens nominated in the Teen Awards have been outstanding but Connor, Jack and Alex really impressed our judges with their incredible stories. It’s been a smashing day and, judging from the noise at the Hammersmith Apollo, the audience have had a great time too!”
